Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Underwriting Specialists work within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring  analytical, technical, written and written coordination. Utilizes underwriting policies, state guidelines, insurance statutes and regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  • Analyzes applications and risks by determining acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  • Works in conjunction with Sales Agents on obtaining the any additional evidence of insurability. 
  • Assist Agents with questions via phone or e mail and escalates issues to management as necessary.
  • Negotiates with agents to reach positive and profitable outcomes.
  • Notifies agencies of adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with all internal departments.
  • May provide assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and to make critical business decisions effectively.
  • Keeps current on state/territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends.

Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Solid knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and product specific knowledge
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills; Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal and external business partners
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred
  • Typically a minimum three to five years underwriting experience
